Large portions of the internet faced significant slowdowns and outages on Tuesday morning after a network issue at Cloudflare, a widely used web infrastructure and security provider. The disruption caused several major platforms — including X (formerly Twitter) — to become temporarily inaccessible or slow to load for many users.
Cloudflare’s Initial Response
According to a Cloudflare spokesperson, the issue began around 6:20 a.m. ET, when the company detected an abnormal surge of traffic affecting one of its core services.
The spokesperson noted that Cloudflare teams immediately began working to stabilize operations:
“We do not yet know the cause of the spike in unusual traffic. We are all hands on deck to make sure all traffic is served without errors. After that, we will turn our attention to investigating the cause of the unusual spike in traffic.”
Service Degradation Confirmed
Cloudflare shortly after updated its status page, confirming that an “internal service degradation” was underway at 6:48 a.m. ET. Although the company reported partial recovery roughly 30 minutes later, users were still likely to see elevated error rates as remediation efforts continued.
By 7:37 a.m. ET, Cloudflare stated it was still investigating the root cause behind the unusual traffic spike and the resulting downtime.
Because Cloudflare powers millions of websites and applications globally, even small disruptions can cause widespread service interruptions across the internet. The company provides tools for preventing cyberattacks, filtering fake traffic, and optimizing website performance, making it a critical backbone for online services.
Impact on Major Platforms
During the outage, many users reported difficulty accessing X. The platform experienced inconsistent availability, with some pages failing to load or responding slowly. By 8 a.m. ET, Business Insider observed that X and other previously affected sites were intermittently returning to normal, although load times remained sluggish in some cases.
Downdetector — the outage-reporting platform — was also briefly unreachable during the early morning hours. User-submitted reports showed temporary disruptions for OpenAI and Grindr as well, though Business Insider noted it could not replicate any issues with ChatGPT.
Coinciding Scheduled Maintenance
The outage occurred around the same time that several Cloudflare data centers, including those in Los Angeles and Atlanta, were undergoing scheduled maintenance. While Cloudflare has not confirmed whether maintenance activities contributed to the issue, the timing has raised questions among users and analysts.
Broader Context of Recent Web Instability
This disruption comes just weeks after a major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage affected numerous popular platforms, such as Reddit, Snapchat, and Venmo. The event highlighted the fragility of the internet ecosystem, in which a handful of major cloud and security companies support large portions of global web traffic.
