A widespread internet disruption occurred on Monday morning when a massive cloud outage struck Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) US-EAST-1 region — its core data hub located in northern Virginia. This critical failure caused major interruptions across multiple global platforms, shaking the online infrastructure that powers everything from e-commerce to communication apps.
Amazon’s main e-commerce platform, along with several of its associated services like Ring doorbells and Alexa, faced significant downtime during the morning hours. The outage rippled far beyond Amazon itself, impacting Meta’s WhatsApp, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Venmo (operated by PayPal), several Epic Games services, and even multiple British government websites. Businesses and users worldwide experienced lagging services, connection errors, and in some cases, complete access failure.
Root Cause: DNS Resolution Issues in DynamoDB
According to AWS status updates, the outage originated from problems in the “DynamoDB” database API endpoints within the US-EAST-1 region. More specifically, the issue stemmed from DNS resolution errors. The Domain Name System (DNS) acts like the internet’s phonebook—translating easy-to-remember URLs like www.trenzest.com into the numeric IP addresses computers use to find websites.
When DNS servers malfunction or fail to provide accurate mappings, users are effectively dialing the wrong number. This leads to requests failing to reach the correct servers, resulting in broken sites or inaccessible services. AWS reported, “Based on our investigation, the issue appears to be related to DNS resolution of the DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1.” The company further advised affected users to flush their DNS caches to help restore connections faster.
No Signs of Malicious Activity
DNS issues can sometimes be linked to cyberattacks, particularly DNS hijacking, where malicious actors redirect traffic to fraudulent sites. However, AWS clarified that there is no current evidence suggesting Monday’s outage was caused by a security breach or attack. Instead, it appears to have been a technical failure that cascaded across dependent systems.
Security expert Davi Ottenheimer, VP at data infrastructure firm Inrupt, explained, “When the system couldn’t correctly resolve which server to connect to, cascading failures took down services across the internet. Today’s AWS outage is a classic availability problem, and we need to start seeing it more as a data integrity failure.”
Timeline of the Outage
The outage began early Monday morning at approximately 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. AWS teams quickly mobilized, applying their first set of mitigation measures around 5:22 a.m. ET. By 6:35 a.m. ET, Amazon announced that it had resolved the core technical issues behind the disruption. However, the company warned that “some services will have a backlog of work to work through, which may take additional time to fully process.”
This means while the main cause was addressed quickly, residual effects persisted for several hours as systems caught up with pending data and requests.
